Thinking about quitting? Wait and do this first!

Work is tough. People can make your job absolutely terrifying and painful. Maybe, if people weren’t involved at all, your work life would be amazing!

I get it, really.

I’m an introvert and people exhaust me to no end. (It’s honestly a miracle and through the grace of God that I’m still married — hehe).

Over a year ago I went through a job change that I should have made much earlier. In my old job I was:

  • Frustrated
  • Burn out
  • Fighting the same battles over and over again
  • Not trusted
  • Not heard
  • Not valued

The only one who valued me was my boss. She was amazing!

Everything else though was just terrible. The work environment was so toxic and the back-stabbing incredibly painful to the point that I was documenting everything I ever said because I knew someone was either going to gas-light me or say I lied about something. Not the kind of company or culture you want to work in at all.

It was terrible.

I thought about changing jobs several times and even went and found another job and put in my two weeks notice. I ended up rescinding that notice because my boss gave me a significant raise. Like this is going to change my life forever kind of raise.

Fast forward 2 years and my boss puts in her resignation letter. CRAP!!!!

What do I do now?

Dude, I’m quitting. For sure, no doubt…not hanging around.

If my one source of joy at the company (other than the work I did) was leaving, why stick around?

Wait — I know what you are thinking…isn’t this post supposed to be about not quitting?! YES!! I’m getting there…hang with me a bit more. ;)

Well, I did find another job right away. One that blew me away.

The culture at my new (and current) job is amazing! We have so much trust and love and mutual respect that it’s a complete game changer. I’ve been in my current position for little over a year and have been loving it.

It doesn’t come without it’s massive stresses though. Again -> PEOPLE…

We have tough clients that are demanding the worse and that have expectations that are unrealistic.

At times, there are coworkers that are having rough days that seem to take it out on you or just simply don’t understand the undo amount of stress they are putting on you with their request.

Day after day, week after week, things pile up and because things are difficult again…thoughts are there about jumping ship…again.

Ugh.

Wait.

Truly wait.

You can’t avoid people as much as you’d like to (unless you move to Alaska or Antartica…) and because of this, you will always see this conflict in some shape or form.

If you wait things may get better, but you need to put in some effort to make it better.

Have those difficult conversations. Show up to those tough meetings.

TAKE TIME TO HEAL WHEN HURT

That one is an important one. If you are struggling and really hurting, you aren’t doing anyone good (especially yourself) by working. Take some time off and heal up before jumping back in.

To pick up where I left off in my current position and the struggles there. I shared my struggles and frustrations with my higher ups. They discussed things with me and really heard me.

About a week or so later, the entire company was told we were getting additional benefits on top of the already amazing benefits we were getting.

I also got some really good news within my personal life which made things even better.

So…wrapping it up.

If your life is on the down and you are depressed and can see no way out other than quitting something…take some time to just reflect and collect your thoughts. Take some time off to heal. Then proceed in the direction that’s best for you.
